2025 Selective High School Results Explained – And What to Do Next

By Published On: July 30, 2025

The 2025 Selective High School Placement Test results are coming out, and across New
South Wales, thousands of families are reviewing what this means for their child’s
educational future. At Global Education Academy, we understand how emotional and
important this milestone is, whether your child received a placement, is on a reserve list, or
didn’t receive an offer.

In this blog, we’ll break down what the results really mean – and guide you on the best next
steps, no matter the outcome.

Understanding the 2025 Selective High School Results

Each year, over 18,000 Year 6 students apply for just over 4,000 places in NSW’s selective
high schools. Entry is based on academic merit, as determined by The Selective High School Placement Test (held in March 2025). The test assesses the following areas:

  1. Reading
  2. Mathematical Reasoning
  3. Thinking Skills
  4. Writing

The test is designed to assess higher-order thinking, not just rote learning – a key reason
why strategic preparation is so crucial.

If Your Child Received an Offer – Congratulations!

This is a significant achievement. NSW selective high schools offer enriched academic
environments, peer-driven motivation, and strong pathways to university. Here’s what to do next:

  • Accept the offer via the High Performing Students Unit (HPSU) portal
  • Plan for the transition – selective schools can be academically intense
  • Celebrate the hard work – this is the result of months (or years) of effort

Global Education Academy offers Year 7 Enrichment Programs to help students thrive once
they start selective school.

If Your Child Is on a Reserve List

Don’t lose hope! Many students are offered places from the reserve list, especially in the weeks following the initial offers. Make sure to:

  • Monitor the reserve list movement through the HPSU portal
  • Keep your child focused on their learning
  • Explore alternative opportunities (e.g. OC or private scholarships, gifted programs)

If Your Child Didn’t Receive an Offer

It’s disappointing, and we understand the frustration. But this does not define your child’s
intelligence or future potential. Here’s what to do next:

  1. Review the results – Which areas were strong? Which need improvement?
  2. Book a learning assessment with Global Education Academy – we’ll identify gaps and strengths
  3. Refocus – many high-achieving students flourish in comprehensive or independent schools
  4. Continue challenging your child – through enrichment tutoring, writing workshops, or STEM programs
