How to Learn from the 2025 NAPLAN Results and Move Forward

By Published On: July 14, 2025

Supporting your child’s learning after NAPLAN is a powerful way to keep their educational journey on track and moving forward with purpose.

The 2025 NAPLAN results provide valuable insights into your child’s literacy and numeracy skills. With more than 1.3 million students across 9,400+ schools completing over 4.5 million online tests, this year’s national assessment offers educators and families a rich snapshot of student progress (ACARA, 2025).

Understand the Results in Context

Start by reviewing your child’s NAPLAN Student Report, which outlines their performance across four key proficiency levels—Exceeding, Strong, Developing, and Needs Additional Support.

Importantly, the report allows you to compare their results nationally, at the state level, and within their school cohort. However, AERO reminds us that:

“NAPLAN offers a point-in-time measure. It should be used alongside school reports, teacher observations and other assessments  form a complete picture of student learning.”
Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO), 2025

If you’re unsure about how to interpret your child’s results or what they mean for their classroom performance, don’t hesitate to speak with their teacher. Teachers can help pinpoint underlying causes behind their results.

Set Specific, Targeted Learning Goals

Once you understand where your child is thriving and where they may need support, you can help them set clear, time-bound learning goals. For example:

  • If they’re in the Developing band for reading, set a goal to read and reflect on one new fiction and one non-fiction book each month.
  • If numeracy is a concern, identify daily or weekly practice opportunities that reinforce core concepts like problem-solving or fractions.

As parents, we play a vital role in our children’s ongoing growth. Here are simple yet effective ways to reinforce learning at home:

  • Read together regularly and talk about the text to build comprehension.
  • Assist with homework by guiding, not giving, answers.
  • Incorporate learning into everyday life, measuring while cooking, budgeting while shopping, or sending text messages using correct spelling and grammar, encouraging writing fluency.

Parental involvement is one of the strongest predictors of student achievement, especially in infants and primary school years.

NAPLAN is just one snapshot in a broader learning journey. It does not measure creativity, critical thinking, curiosity, resilience, or many other traits that contribute to a child’s overall development.

“NAPLAN is a tool—not a verdict. It’s what we do with the results that matters most.”
— AERO Analytical Insights, 2025

By focusing on growth, not just scores, you’ll help your child develop a love for learning that lasts well beyond any test.

NAPLAN results are most useful when they reinforce positive action. By reviewing the 2025 results in partnership with your child’s school report card and using them to set clear learning goals, you empower your child to take confident steps forward.
